What is a Spixl project?

What it is

A Spixl project is a low-tech, high-impact visual diary of any changing environment.

Every Spixl project begins with a location – natural or urban – to be documented. We provide a camera mount, QR code and powerful website, and smartphones do the rest.

What do you want to chronicle? Tracking change has never been more convenient. Get in touch here and let us help.

How it works

Once you sign up with an annual subscription, you receive a user login, and your phone mount, info sign with QR code and mounting hardware get shipped.

To set up for the project, simply attach the mount to a 4 x 4-inch post and secure it in the ground. (Or find an existing site on which to attach the bracket.) For more tips on setting up your project, check out our FAQ page.

Then log in to the Spixl website, where you will be directed to your dashboard to monitor the project. There, you can add details and links to your project page, approve or remove content, set how frequently you want to receive update emails, copy your unique embed link, and more.

To upload an image, put your phone in the mount and take a picture. While still in photo mode, point the phone at the QR code and you will be directed to click on a link to upload the pic. Congratulations, your project is underway!

Who can do it and where?

We believe photography can stimulate understanding and action. That’s why we strive to make it more accessible.

With our Spixl kits, almost anyone can document almost anywhere. Have a construction build you need to promote? A thriving garden you’d like to capture? Maybe you want to track how the climate is affecting your local glacier. Spixl lets you tell your story – simply and conveniently.

Whether you are looking for crowd-sourced photos from a high-traffic area or planning to take one shot a day in your own backyard, the project starts with the first picture and goes for as long as you want. If you have ownership of or permission to use a location, you’re ready to roll.
